The
China National Biotec Group (CNBG) changed its name
from the China National Biological Products Corporation
with the approval of the State Industry and Commerce
Administration Bureau on Aug. 6th, 2003. CNBG, a key
state enterprise managed by the Assets Supervision and
Administration Commission of the State Council (SASAC),
is the largest bioengineering corporation engaged in
the R & D, manufacturing and marketing of biological
products in China. It supervises China National Scientific
Instruments and Materials Import/Export Corporation,
China National Medical Equipment & Supplies I &
E Corporation, and six biological product research institutes
formerly under the Ministry of Health located in Beijing,
Changchun, Chengdu, Lanzhou, Shanghai and Wuhan plus
the Beijing Tiantan Biological Products Co., Ltd., which
is a listed company. The group employs nearly 10,000
people, over 4,000 of which are scientists and technicians.
Research units of the CNBG have been providing various
kinds of vaccines and therapeutic drugs for the market
since the founding of the PRC, including vaccines
and drugs required for the state's immunization program,
and contributed to the complete elimination of smallpox
and near elimination of poliomyelitis and other diseases
that have plagued people in our country for centuries.
Statistics from the Ministry of Health indicate that
since China put its immunization program into practice
in 1978, CNBG's vaccines have decreased the incidences
of measles, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, poliomyelitis
and tuberculosis by over 300 million cases, reduced
the death rate by over 4 million for these diseases,
and lowered hospital expenses by more than 40,000
million yuan RMB. In 1985, CNBG became the first organization
to successfully develop hepatitis B vaccine in China.
A little more than a decade after the vaccine was
put into use, the transmission of Hepatitis B has
been effectively brought under control. In particular,
infection in newborn infants has been lowered from
10% to 1%. Recently, CNBG became the first in the
world to develop a vaccine for dysentery. During the
1998 flood in China, CNBG organized distribution of
typhoid vaccine, thus playing a leading role in the
objective of "no epidemics after natural disasters"
set by chinese government.
China National Scientific Instruments and Materials
Import/Export Corporation and China National Medical
Equipment & Supplies I & E Corporation, affiliated
with CNBG, have extensive groups of clients and mature
sales network, with time-honored history and great
reputation in the fields of China science and technology
and medical sanitation.
In the coming years, CNBG will be shifting the focus
of its efforts from traditional biotechnology to modern
biotechnology, from preventive products to a variety
of manufactured biological pharmaceuticals, from production
of generic drugs to production of the group's own
proprietary products and from the domestic market
to the international market. CNBG is working to become
a large group of enterprises marketing famous brands,
with its own proprietary products, strong core business
and the ability to compete in the international market.
